A Heart of Cranes and a Message of Hope

In Japanese tradition, folding 1,000 paper cranes, Senbazuru (千羽鶴), is believed to grant a heartfelt wish and symbolizes peace, healing, and a long life.

What began as an initiative by the Asian American and Pacific Islander Employee Impact Group (AAPI EIG) quickly grew into a collective effort embraced by the entire Fresenius Kabi community. Together, employees donated eight heart-shaped artworks crafted from 1,000 hand-folded cranes to the Cancer Survivorship Center of the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Each piece is a tribute to cancer patients, survivors, and the caregivers who support them every day.

The project began in May 2023 during AAPI Heritage Month, when the AAPI EIG launched the Senbazuru initiative. Employees across U.S.-sites joined folding events that fostered connection, creativity, and compassion. Inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who folded cranes while battling leukemia, this act of creativity and compassion reflects the strength of community and culture. It also aligns with our Committed to Life promise – extending care beyond medicine.

To further support this meaningful initiative, a $25,000 donation was made to the Cancer Survivorship Center.
