Transforming Pain into Art
A father's artistic journey through his son's illness
A rare diagnosis with deep impact
Vicente was born with Hirschsprung’s disease, a rare condition that affects the intestines. In 2021, things took a sudden turn when he had to undergo urgent surgery because of a serious blockage in his bowel. Since then, he’s been living with short bowel syndrome and requires parenteral nutrition.
Finding expression in unlikely places
During this time of fear and uncertainty, Marco began painting. But not on regular canvases. He used the cardboards from his son’s parenteral nutrition products that had become part of their daily life. They became part of his way of processing everything, showing his love, fear, and strength.
“I realized I had to transform what I was going through and find a way to express all those emotions.”
Even though the toughest moments are behind them now, painting has stayed with Marco. It’s become a meaningful part of his life. Looking back, painting helped him staying connected to his son and everything they have gone through together. We’re grateful that Marco chose to share his story and his art with us.
“And if my story can help even a few other parents, then it’s worth sharing.”
Hirschsprung’s disease is a congenital condition. It affects the large intestine and occurs when nerve cells do not form completely in a part of the colon. These nerve cells are essential for moving stool around the bowel. Without them, the affected section of the colon cannot properly contract and relax, leading to a blockage or severe constipation.
The main treatment is surgery. The affected part of the colon without nerve cells is removed and the healthy part is connected to the anus. With proper treatment, most children go on to live healthy lives, although some may continue to have bowel issues.
Marco is one of many who have used art to process difficult experiences. Each piece tells a personal story and showcases emotions turned into creative expression.
