JUMPstart Renal Nutrition Therapy Program: Announcing our 2024/2025 Cohort Winner

Malaysian researcher wins research support for kidney nutrition study

July 22, 2025

Dr. Wan Rohaslizan Wan Daud, an Internal Medicine Specialist and Nephrology Fellow from Malaysia, has been named the winner in the second wave of the JUMPstart Renal Nutrition Therapy program, a global initiative by Fresenius Kabi to advance research in chronic kidney disease (CKD) nutrition.

Her clinical study will explore the impact of a moderately restricted protein, plant-dominant diet with ketoanalogue supplementation on nutritional markers and kidney function in peritoneal dialysis patients. The project earned her a €100,000 research support and the recognition of an international jury of nephrology experts: Prof. Lim Soo Kun, Prof. Giorgina Piccoli, Prof. Liliana Garneata, Prof. Jie Dong and Prof. Juan Jesus Carrero.

This cohort of the JUMPstart Renal Nutrition Therapy program brought together 20 nephrologists and diabetologists from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Participants tackled a speed research challenge, built global connections, and deepened their understanding of renal nutrition therapy.

“When I found out I was the winner of JUMPstart, I was very overwhelmed with my emotions. I definitely didn’t believe it,” said Wan Daud. During her winner presentation, she emphasized a holistic view of patient care – not only focusing on clinical outcomes, but on the broader well-being of patients. “This is why I started my journey in the first place: I’m here for my patients. JUMPstart is not just a program. It’s a transformation.”

Advancing renal nutrition research

The JUMPstart Renal Nutrition Therapy Program is designed to support early-career healthcare professionals in exploring how nutritional strategies can improve outcomes for people living with chronic kidney disease. By fostering international collaboration and mentorship, the program helps translate clinical insights into real-world impact – and encourages a new generation of researchers to shape the future of kidney care.
