Plasma collection solutions that support essential medicine supply

Fresenius Kabi provides plasma collection solutions that help secure the plasma supply needed to manufacture essential medicines or plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs). The demand for PDMPs continues to grow, and patients who rely on them have very few other treatment options – donated plasma is the essential starting material for every PDMP. Plasma collection centers use Fresenius Kabi technologies and digital solutions to support safe and efficient collection of plasma, ultimately helping healthcare systems maintain this vital PDMP access for patients.

PDMPs are essential for treating a wide range of conditions, including immune deficiencies, bleeding disorders, and neurological diseases. Plasma can be extracted from whole blood donations or donated directly through a procedure called plasmapheresis. During plasmapheresis, a needle is placed into a vein in the donor’s arm and connected to a system. The plasmapheresis machine separates plasma from other blood components and returns the remaining components to the donor.1 Automated plasmapheresis technologies support the collection of source plasma used in the manufacture of PDMPs, and help plasma collection centers improve efficiency, maintain product quality and support donor care.

Advancing plasma collection technology

The Aurora and Aurora Xi plasmapheresis systems are automated plasma collection platforms designed for plasma collection centers. Aurora and Aurora Xi systems use proprietary spinning membrane filtration technology to separate and collect plasma to help with the separation process. Aurora Xi is also enabled with Adaptive Nomogram, an alternate algorithm, designed to increase plasma collection efficiency. This means centers can collect more plasma per donor than previously, helping to safeguard the plasma supply.

Supporting donor experience and staff workflows

Modern plasmapheresis systems like the Aurora and Aurora Xi are designed to support both the donor and operator experience with intuitive digital design and safety features. Features such as guided visual prompts, donor-facing displays, automated procedure management, and intelligent automated flow control feedback to help provide visibility throughout the donation process. Operator notification systems and troubleshooting tools can assist staff in identifying and resolving issues efficiently.

Digital connectivity and data management

Plasma collection centers increasingly rely on integrated digital systems to support operational efficiency. Our DXT Data Management System software can connect our plasmapheresis devices with donor and data management systems, enabling automated procedure setup, electronic data transfer and two-way communication between devices and collection center software. These capabilities can help reduce manual documentation, allow for paperless systems, support data-driven decisions, and enable compliant tracking of donations – reducing the administrative burden on center staff.

FAQ

Fresenius Kabi offers a comprehensive plasma collection platform that includes Aurora and Aurora Xi plasmapheresis systems, digital connectivity solutions, single-use disposables and technical support services. These solutions help plasma collection centers support operational efficiency, data management, donor care and reliable plasma collection – ultimately supporting global plasma supply.

Plasma is the essential starting material for plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs), used to treat patients with immune deficiencies, bleeding disorders, neurological conditions and other rare and chronic diseases. Because plasma cannot be manufactured, ongoing plasma donations are necessary to maintain patient access to these therapies.

Plasmapheresis is a procedure that allows donation of source plasma. A needle is placed into a vein in the donor’s arm and connected to a plasmapheresis machine. The machine separates plasma from other blood components and returns the remaining components to the donor.1

Automated plasmapheresis systems support plasma collection by facilitating key steps in the donation process. They can help streamline workflows, support data capture, improve operational visibility and contribute to consistent collection procedures.

Digital connectivity can support plasma collection centers by connecting devices with donor and data management systems. This can enable electronic data transfer, automated procedure setup and clearer operational visibility across collection workflows.
