Medical nutrition innovation: advancing patient care

Applying research, technology and patient centricity to medical nutrition

Medical nutrition continues to evolve as healthcare professionals seek new ways to support recovery, improve outcomes and address the diverse needs of patients across care settings. Innovation in medical nutrition helps improve how nutritional support is developed, delivered and experienced, combining scientific research, clinical expertise and technology to address evolving patient needs across hospital, outpatient and homecare settings. At Fresenius Kabi Medical Nutrition, innovation focuses on developing practical nutrition solutions that support safe, effective and patient-centered care.

Meeting changing patient and healthcare needs

Patients requiring medical nutrition often face complex health challenges, ranging from critical illness to surgery to chronic disease. Healthcare providers must balance individualized nutritional requirements with the realities of busy clinical environments, evolving treatment standards and growing demand for care.

At the same time, improving adherence to nutrition therapy remains an ongoing challenge. As healthcare systems increasingly focus on outcomes, efficiency and patient experience, we continue to evolve medical nutrition solutions across parenteral and enteral nutrition.

Turning scientific insight into patient benefit

Innovation in medical nutrition is driven by scientific research, clinical expertise, and continuous feedback from patients and healthcare professionals. These insights are translated into solutions that support recovery, improve adherence to therapy, and help clinicians deliver care more efficiently.

Fresenius invests in research and development to deliver products that advance medical nutrition and respond to the changing needs of patients and care providers.

Our new state-of-the-art Medical Nutrition Innovation Center in Bad Homburg, Germany, is designed to accelerate new product development and drives innovation-led growth by focusing on advancing enteral nutrition solutions to meet the needs of vulnerable patient populations. It also underscores Fresenius’ commitment to advancing patient care through science-based solutions and reinforces Europe as a key hub for healthcare.

We focus on solutions that can help improve the patient experience while supporting safe, efficient nutrition delivery across hospitals, outpatients, and homecare settings. Through collaboration with healthcare professionals, we incorporate emerging evidence and clinical insights into our product development efforts.

Innovation across enteral and parenteral nutrition

Fresenius Kabi’s Medical Nutrition business develops and provides solutions across enteral and parenteral nutrition, combining clinical expertise with a broad understanding of patient needs.

Our innovation efforts span multiple areas, including:

  • Specialized formulations designed for distinct patient populations, including pediatric patients
  • Enhanced nutritional profiles with higher protein and calorie content for patients with specific nutritional needs or limited volume tolerance
  • Product formats and sensory improvements that may help support acceptance and adherence to nutrition therapy
  • Plant-based nutrition options that reflect changing patient preferences
  • Region-specific product development aligned with local clinical practices and regulatory requirements

By maintaining both a global perspective and local focus, we work to ensure that new products meet the needs of healthcare professionals and patients in diverse markets around the world. With more than €50 million invested in the overall Bad Homburg campus in recent years, the Innovation Center adds to Fresenius’ ability to develop future-oriented therapies and contribute to resilient healthcare systems. It also demonstrates the continued commitment of Fresenius to its local-for-local approach not only when it comes to production but also in research and development.

Advancing nutrition delivery and administration

Innovation extends beyond nutritional formulations themselves. The way nutrition is prepared, handled and administered can play an important role in supporting patient care and operational efficiency. That is why we work to design container technologies to simplify workflows and support safe handling practices.

This includes multi-chamber bags with a shelf-life of 18 months to two years to allow nutritional components to be stored separately thus increasing their stability until needed while helping streamline preparation and ultimately enhancing convenience across inpatient, ambulatory and homecare settings.

The Innovation Center is also driving KabiHelp, the development of automated pumping systems for patient-specific compounding of sterile ingredients into bags for parenteral nutrition (PN) solutions. This enables the preparation of tailored micro- and macronutrient PN admixtures while reducing the need for manual additions.

Exploring new opportunities through clinical research

Scientific discovery continues to shape the future of medical nutrition.

Fish oil-containing lipid emulsions remain an important area of research in parenteral nutrition. A meta-analysis including 47 clinical studies has reported associations with lower rates of infections and sepsis, as well as shorter ICU and hospital stays in certain patient populations – highlighting possible benefits for both patients and healthcare systems.1

We evaluate emerging evidence and explore opportunities to develop research findings into meaningful innovations for patient care.

Building the future of medical nutrition

Innovation in medical nutrition is an ongoing process of listening, learning and advancing. By combining scientific research, clinical expertise, product development and delivery technologies, Fresenius Kabi works to strengthen nutritional care for patients around the world.
