Partnering with blood centers to provide life-saving blood products when patients need them the most

Integrated portfolio supports blood component collection and processing through connected solutions

Every blood donation has the power to save lives. In Fresenius' MedTech business, we understand this responsibility. For almost three decades, we have supported blood collection, processing, and transfusion workflows with solutions that help blood centers collect, process and make life-saving blood products available for patient care. We provide an integrated portfolio of blood center technologies, including whole blood processing, apheresis and digital solutions designed to deliver an exceptional donor experience optimize blood center operations and ensure availability of life-saving blood products.

The World Health Organization considers whole blood, red blood cells, and platelets to be essential medicines, highlighting their importance to health systems.1 Blood centers must continuously balance donor availability, evolving patient demand and operational efficiency to ensure life-saving blood products are available when and where they are needed. Achieving this requires technologies that support the production of high-quality blood products.

Fresenius Kabi provides an integrated portfolio to connect blood donors, patients and outcomes, including:

  • Donation equipment supporting donation and apheresis, or donation of specific blood components
    • Alyx Component Collection System for red blood cells and plasma
    • Amicus and AmiCORE Apheresis System for platelets with concurrent red cells, plasma and platelet additive solution (PAS)
  • Advanced blood bag systems
  • Blood processing equipment
  • Blood mixing and weighing device
  • DXT Data Management System to optimize operations
  • Single-use sterile disposables

With a broad portfolio of solutions and deep experience in transfusion medicine, we are a global leader in blood bags, apheresis and blood component processing.

Blood bag systems help deliver donated blood to patients

Blood bag systems are the foundation for blood supply for patients worldwide. More than 90 percent of all blood donations are processed in systems of multiple bags with different functions.⁴ These systems enable production of various blood component preparations according to national and international standards, supporting donor and patient safety.

Blood cell separators support patients requiring specific blood components

Amicus and AmiCORE cell separators are primarily used to collect blood platelets, also known as thrombocytes. Platelets play an important role in blood clotting and are often urgently needed to treat patients in trauma or surgery, or those with clotting disorders. Cell separators effectively collect platelets and allow more platelets to be collected per donation than possible through whole blood donation, helping blood centers address patient need for this critical blood component more efficiently.

Connected devices for smoother workflows and donation tracking

We developed a dedicated DXT Data Management System software platform to connect collection devices directly to donor databases and automate traceability of blood donations, supporting productivity and safety. Our blood mixing and weighing device incorporates a touch screen, data connectivity and planned RFID functionality – radio-frequency identification, a technology that uses radio waves to automatically identify and track items without direct scanning – to improve traceability of donations.

FAQ

Fresenius Kabi provides integrated blood collection solutions for blood centers, including equipment for whole blood donation and apheresis procedures, blood bag systems, blood processing technologies, digital data management tools and sterile single-use disposables. These solutions support blood collection, processing, traceability and operational efficiency across the donation workflow.

Apheresis is a blood collection procedure that allows specific blood components, such as platelets, to be collected from a donor. During the procedure, the desired component is separated and collected, while the remaining blood components are returned to the donor. Blood donation through apheresis enables blood centers to collect targeted components needed for patient care.

Blood cell separators are used during apheresis procedures to collect specific blood components, such as platelets. The technology helps blood centers efficiently collect blood components most needed locally.

Blood bag systems are a key part of blood collection and processing. They support the collection, handling, storage, and preparation of blood components and enable blood centers to collect different blood components.

Digital data management solutions can connect collection devices with donor databases, automate donation traceability and streamline workflows. Connected technologies help blood centers improve data visibility, support operational efficiency and enhance tracking throughout the blood collection process.
