International Nurses Day 2021

Niamh Furey, Managing Director UK and Ireland Fresenius Kabi Ltd and Calea (UK) Ltd

It is my honour and privilege to share the aims of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) today in showing the world who nurses are and highlight what they do as we celebrate International Nurses Day 2021.  Let’s start with the amazing nurse teams at Fresenius Kabi and Calea.

Our nurses already have a voice as leaders of change within our business, they are trailblazers and visionaries in their specialist field and this is most evident as a consequence of the pandemic; nurses anticipate and understand patient and customer needs, identify trends and where change is needed they deliver creative solutions to address those challenges.

During one of the most challenging periods of history, this incredible team of nurses performed in excess of 145,000 patient visits, initiated a hospital admissions avoidance strategy, launched a daytime advice line to connect virtually with patients, developed a paediatric care pathway, launched a biosimilars nursing service, collaborated in pandemic initiatives such as #fortheloveofscrubs and still found time to celebrate together during National Nurses week and enjoy success as finalists at the HCA Excellence in Nursing Awards and LaingBuisson Awards that celebrate businesses setting new standards of excellence.

Thank you to all our nurses for embodying our values.  I will always champion you as nurses, educators, leaders, advocates and colleagues. You are fundamental to our success and our mission………..’Caring for Life’.  #IND2021

Please join us in celebrating International Nurses Day 2021 “Nurses – A voice to Lead”. Internally we are running a series of events over a week encouraging our nurses to “take-over” and lead with their personal inspirational stories of what being a nurse means to them.

I am incredibly proud of how we have responded during the pandemic to safeguard our patients and nurses who have been putting themselves at risk on the frontline providing services to patients in their own homes, hospitals or care homes.  We have supported the NHS with rapid discharge of patients out of hospital and taken on extra tasks to reduce the need for patients to go into hospital.

At Fresenius Kabi and Calea we hugely value the work our nurses do for patients and have invested in individual development and training with clear competency levels and reward structure.  We have learned many new ways of working during the pandemic, virtual visits to name one, which could help shape the future of the way we nurse. I appreciate the collaborative working and strong leadership which has driven this innovation.

To nurses throughout the world, we salute you. #IND2021
