Fresenius Kabi Employees Help Amplify LGBTQ+ and Ally Voices
At Fresenius Kabi, inclusion and belonging matter. That’s the foundation of the PRIDE Employee Impact Group (EIG), formed three years ago to create a welcoming space for all, including LGBTQ+ employees and allies across the company. Through workshops, community outreach and open dialogue, PRIDE is building a community that fosters authenticity and respect and drives awareness of the LGBTQ+ experience in the workplace and beyond.
“PRIDE is based on the belief that we work better and live better when we are our authentic selves,” said co-chair Liz Eyas, Senior Project Manager, U.S. Vigilance, “Through PRIDE we can share the belief that, regardless of how we identify, we're appreciated and valued.”
The group now includes nearly 80 members—a 22% increase over the past two years—and offers employees opportunities to connect, learn, and advocate.
“People who come to the PRIDE EIG find a safe space,” said co-chair Urvish Patel, Sales & Operations Manager. “Here, we can share our personal stories and find support, helpful information and resources. It can really help improve lives.”
Patel leads PRIDE alongside Eyas and Jennifer Randolph, Senior Manager, Patient and Provider Support Programs. Randolph says the group is about more than connection—it's also about making an impact.
Exploring Issues and Building Understanding
PRIDE regularly hosts discussions and workshops on topics such as gender identity, allyship and supporting LGBTQ+ youth. In a recent session, a professional facilitator and members shared advice on how to support someone who is coming out.
“Coming out is such an important milestone,” said Eyas. “If someone comes out to you, they are trusting you, so validating that trust makes all the difference.”
Eyas, an ally herself, said that small acts—such as sharing pronouns in an email signature—can help signal acceptance and respect. “This group has helped me be more vocal as an ally and be more open to important conversations that include differing opinions,” she added. To further promote open dialogue and a sense of community, PRIDE launched a monthly book club, which has grown in popularity thanks to its timely topics and thoughtful discussions, Patel said.
Serving the Community
In addition to fostering internal awareness, PRIDE is active in giving back. Last year, the group sponsored the annual AIDS Foundation of Chicago Run/Walk for the third time, raising more than $3,600 and fielding nearly 50 participants. This initiative supports awareness and critical services like mental health care, HIV testing and housing.
Other activities have included:
- Setting up a summer break camp for LGBTQ+ youth to share experiences and find support
- Staffing a booth at the Lake County PrideFest to help educate and engage the broader community
- Volunteering for Youth Services in Glenview/Northbrook, which provides mental health services to local families
- Sorting donations at Cradles to Crayons Chicago, a nonprofit that supports children experiencing clothing insecurity
- Collaborating with other Fresenius Kabi EIGs on donation drives and community initiatives
The group also creates space for connection through outings and events that build camaraderie and community.
Looking Ahead
PRIDE’s co-leads are working to expand the group’s reach to all Fresenius Kabi locations, including distribution and manufacturing sites, while continuing to drive engagement at its U.S. headquarters and partnering with senior leadership.
“Groups like PRIDE are essential in ensuring that employee voices are heard, valued and respected,” said Kristin Vollen, Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, and Co-Executive Sponsor of PRIDE.
As a healthcare company, Fresenius Kabi understands the importance of recognizing and addressing disparities in access, treatment and experiences for LGBTQ+ patients. PRIDE is also playing a role in helping raise awareness of these challenges and bringing forward employee perspectives to inform broader conversations.
“Whether you join to connect, to learn, or to contribute to change, PRIDE offers a meaningful space to be part of something bigger,” said co-lead Randolph. “We invite everyone to attend a workshop or event and see how this community is making a difference.”
