Fresenius Kabi is committed to patient safety and responsible opioid use
Fresenius Kabi manufactures injectable opioids exclusively for controlled hospital and surgical settings under strict FDA and DEA regulations. To help prevent misuse and diversion, our products feature advanced safeguards such as secure packaging systems that aid in diversion deterrence, and ready-to-administer, low-dose formats. We also support opioid stewardship through education, compliance programs, and by offering non-opioid alternatives for pain management.
Controlled Hospital Use Only
Fresenius Kabi manufactures sterile injectable opioids (such as fentanyl) that are formulated and packaged for use exclusively in hospital and surgical settings. These medicines are administered by healthcare professionals (doctors and nurses), which minimizes the risk of misuse or diversion. Importantly, Fresenius Kabi does not produce oral solid opioids.
Specialized Packaging and Ready-to-Administer Innovations
To further enhance safety and prevent diversion, many of our opioid products are packaged in our proprietary MicroVault® and Simplist® prefilled syringe packaging systems, which are also optimized for locked medication dispensing cabinets in hospitals.
Strict Distribution Controls
Fresenius Kabi maintains controlled distribution agreements with licensed wholesalers. Products are sold only to authorized professionals, and internal monitoring systems flag suspicious orders.
Compliance and Regulatory Oversight
All opioid products are manufactured and stored in facilities regulated by FDA and DEA, ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards.
Non-Opioid Alternatives
To support safe pain management, Fresenius Kabi offers healthcare professionals a range of non-opioid medicines for pain therapy, allowing reduced reliance on opioids where possible.
Education and Partnerships
Fresenius Kabi collaborates with organizations like the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation to promote opioid stewardship and medication safety through educational programs and best practices for hospitals.
In Summary
These combined measures—hospital-only use, strict distribution, compliance, education, innovative packaging and low-dose formats—are designed to maximize patient safety and minimize the risk of opioid misuse or diversion.
