Clinical Nutrition Masterclass 2025

Advancing Clinical Nutrition: A Multinational Masterclass Hosted by Fresenius Kabi Region International

On June 13 to 14, Fresenius Kabi’s Region International brought together over 100 healthcare professionals from more than 24 countries in Madrid for a high-level Clinical Nutrition Masterclass focused on “Practical ICU and Surgical Care: Bridging Theory and Practice”.

The event served as a dynamic platform for international exchange, uniting healthcare professionals from ten different specialties in a shared mission to improve patient outcomes through evidence-based nutrition strategies.

The sessions were enriched by the expertise of three globally recognized speakers, each bringing cutting-edge insights into the evolving science of clinical nutrition:

  • Dr. Diana Cárdenas - Institut Gustave Roussy, France
  • Prof. Paul E. Wischmeyer - Duke University Hospital, USA
  • Prof. Renée Blaauw - Stellenbosch University, South Africa
Their sessions explored critical topics such as:
  • Prehabilitation and nutritional optimization and the impact of nutrition therapy in surgical care
  • Personalized clinical nutrition for critically ill patients
  • The vital role of lipid emulsions beyond energy provision
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy revolutionizing patient care and cost-effective solutions
  • Implementing Medical Nutrition Therapy Teams (MNTTs)

A particularly impactful discussion took place during the “Meet the Expert” session featuring valuable frontline experiences from Dr. Melina Castro, Head of Medical and Scientific Affairs, Fresenius Kabi Brazil, and Adriana Crivelli, Gastroenterologist, Hospital de La Plata and Nutrihome, Argentina, where MNTTs are already driving meaningful impact in Intensive Care Units and surgical recovery.

While Fresenius Kabi’s Region International had organized Masterclasses before, these events have focused on specific parts of the region, such as Latin America. This year marked a significant shift: for the first time, the region united a truly international audience under one roof.

By bringing together professionals from diverse healthcare systems – including the Middle East, Russia, Latin America, Canada, and Africa – the event created large space for shared learning. Participants discovered that despite regional differences, they face many of the same challenges and barriers. Interactive case studies and collaborative workshops ensured that participants gained both scientific insights and practical tools to apply within their local healthcare systems. They tackled real-world scenarios and collaborated on innovative solutions to improve patient nutrition pathways.

The Masterclass was chaired by Veronique Donoghue, Head of Medical Affairs at Fresenius Kabi Region International, and focused strongly on the patient journey:

We see the advancement of clinical nutrition not just as a goal, but also as our responsibility. Around the world many healthcare professionals still receive limited education in this area. This Masterclass was designed to help close that gap by offering a collaborative, cross-border learning experience aimed at empowering participants to deliver better patient care.
