Advancing nutrition through research, collaboration and clinical impact

The annual INDI/Fresenius Kabi Research Symposium returned to TU Dublin in June 2026, bringing together dietitians, healthcare professionals and researchers from across Ireland to showcase the latest developments in nutrition and dietetic practice. The event highlighted the vital role of research in advancing evidence-based nutrition care and improving patient outcomes.

Held in partnership with the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI), this year's symposium welcomed more than 100 attendees and featured over 160 research posters, with 140 showcased on the evening, demonstrating the breadth and quality of nutrition research taking place across Ireland.

Research in Three: Driving Evidence into Practice

A key highlight of the symposium was the presentation of the top three research abstracts, selected for oral presentation based on their innovation, quality and potential impact on practice.

Winner: Cancer Dietetic Access & Outcomes

Doireann Ní Chonaill

This national service evaluation identified significant gaps in access to dietetic services within cancer care, despite high rates of malnutrition and nutrition-impact symptoms. The findings provide strong evidence to support workforce planning and greater integration of dietetic services within oncology pathways.

Celebrating Excellence in Dietetic Practice

The symposium also recognised outstanding contributions through the Research Dietitian of the Year and Research & Quality Improvement in Dietetic Practice Awards.

Research Dietitian of the Year Award Winner: Katie Johnston

Awarded for The Development and Implementation of Targeted Dietetic Interventions During Cancer Survivorship, with a Focus on Early-Stage Hormone Receptor Positive Breast and Gynaecologic Cancers.

The project explored innovative models of dietetic care using digital tools and structured interventions to improve patient outcomes and address unmet needs within survivorship care pathways.

Research & Quality Improvement in Dietetic Practice Award Winner: Maria McKenna

The Research & Quality Improvement in Dietetic Practice Award recognises innovative projects that drive measurable improvements in patient care, service delivery and dietetic practice.. The award celebrates dietitians who are driving positive change through evidence-based quality improvement initiatives and practical solutions that can be translated into clinical practice.

Maria McKenna received the Research & Quality Improvement in Dietetic Practice Award for her project, Enhancing Nutritional Quality Through Standardised Menus. Her work demonstrated measurable improvements in nutritional quality, reduced food waste, delivered cost efficiencies and enhanced resident satisfaction, highlighting the value of standardised nutrition practices in long-term care settings
